Best Things to Do in Las Vegas

Every year, millions of people from all over the world travel to Las Vegas to experience world-class shows, luxury hotels, and upscale resorts. But theres more to Las Vegas than the Sin City experience.

The city is home to great family-friendly neighborhoods, top-rated schools, and wonderful destinations. Before moving to Las Vegas, discover what else the city has to offer beyond the glitz and glamor of the Strip.

History

The citys history began in the 19th century when Mexican scout Rafael Rivera ventured into the desert and found the oasis of Las Vegas Springs. The valleys verdant grasses inspired him to name the area Las Vegas which means the meadows in Spanish.

Later in 1890, Las Vegas became a prime stop along the San Pedro, Salt Lake City, and Los Angeles railroad route. As the years went by, more and more saloons, stores, and houses popped up around town. The city of Las Vegas was officially founded on May 15, 1905.

The hotel boom started in 1941 when El Rancho Vegas, the first hotel in the city, opened its doors. Its success inspired other hotels to set up shop along Highway 91. The said highway would later become The Strip as we know it today.

In 1966, businessman Howard Hughes decided to buy the Desert Inn and other hotels in the area. This ushered in the era of glamorous luxury hotels and casinos. By 1994, the city has been completely transformed into one of the worlds most exciting entertainment districts, complete with hotels, casinos, restaurants, and resorts.

Education

Las Vegas is serviced by the Clark County School District (CCSD), the countrys fifth-largest school district. The districts large scope has allowed it to offer services like a school police department and adult education courses.

CCSD has a wide array of Magnet Schools, Advanced Placement Programs, and Career and Technical Academies. Their nationally recognized programs and innovative partnerships with Vegas PBS and The Public Education Foundation are providing students with limitless opportunities for personal and educational growth.

Universities, colleges, and career schools are also abundant in the Las Vegas metro area. Some of the most recognized schools include the College of Southern Nevada, University of Nevada, Nevada State College, and Touro University Nevada.
